A Tangail court on Monday sentenced three people to death and four others to life imprisonment for killing a former chairman of Dainna Union Parishad Rafiqul Islam Faruk in Tangail sadar upazila in 2013.

Tangail Additional Sessions Judge Md Foysal Al Mamun handed down the punishment.

The condemned convicts are- Saniat Khan Bappa, 30, the then vice-president of Chhatra League, Md Azad, 25, son of Afzal Fakir and Shahjahan Mia, 31, son of Shaheed Mia of Dainna union.

The court also fined them Tk one lakh each.

The lifers are—Md Sujon, 32,  Sanwar Hossain, 34, Shafiqul Islam Shafik, 25, Rujbel alias Emon, 25. Of them, Shafik and Rujbel were tried in absentia.

It also fined them Tk 50,000 each, in default, to suffer one year more in jail.

The court also acquitted Sanjit Ghosh as allegation brought against him could not be proved.

According to the prosecution, Rafiqul Islam Faruk, vice-president of Sadar upazila unit BNP and former UP chairman, was shot and stabbed to death on December 13, 2013.

Lavlu Mia, younger brother of the victim, filed a case with Tangail Sadar Police Station.

Then DB inspector and also the investigating officer of the case Ashok Kumar Singha submitted chargesheet against eight people on August 13, 2015.
