Four people, including a mother and her son, were killed and two others injured Saturday morning in a head-on collision between a covered van and a CNG autorickshaw in Gazipur's Kaliakair upazila.
The deceased were identified as Nasima Begum, her son Asadul and Firoza Begum. The identity of the other victim, a man, is yet to be confirmed.
According to police and locals, the accident occurred around 11:30 a.m. in the Kanchanpur area on the Phulbaria-Maona regional road.
The autorickshaw was heading toward Kaliakair from Sreepur's Maona with five passengers when the covered van coming from the opposite direction rammed it, crumpling the three-wheeler and throwing it off the road.
Firoza Begum and an unidentified passenger died on the spot. The injured were rushed to nearby hospitals, which meant Nasima and her son were separated in death as well. Asadul passed away at the Kaliakair Upazila Health Complex, while his mother died at the Mirzapur Kumudini Hospital.
The crash disrupted traffic on the regional road for about half an hour before locals helped clear the damaged vehicles.
Mo. Shahidul Islam, Kaliakair Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC), said legal proceedings against the covered van driver are currently underway.
