Four members of a family were killed and another was injured as a drum truck crashed into a CNG-run auto-rickshaw at Gachtola in Tarakanda upazila of Mymensingh on Thursday morning.
The truck hit the Netrokona-bound auto-rickshaw around 7:45 am on Mymensingh-Netrakona highway, leaving two people dead on the spot and three others injured, said Shyamganj highway police outpost in-charge Sanjay Chakraborty.
The deceased were identified as Abdur Rashid ,60, his wife Bokul Begum,55, his brother-in-law Bidda Mia,42, and Bidda’s daughter-in-law Laboni Akter ,18 — all from Sat Burikanda village in Kailati union of Netrokona Sadar upazila.
According to police and local sources the victims, who used to live in Gazipur due to work, were traveling to Netrakona to visit Abdur Rashid’s ailing father-in-law.
Bidda Mia and Laboni died on the spot, while the three injured people were rushed to Mymensingh Medical College Hospital.
Abdur Rashid and Bokul Begum succumbed to their injuries at the hospital.
Another passenger identified as Mohammad Antar Mia 21, son of Hanif Mia from Bhober Bazar in Purbadhala upazila of Netrakona, is undergoing treatment at the hospital.
Police seized the drum truck but the driver managed to flee, said Sanjay Chakraborty.
