Five people were dead and two were injured in a head-on collision between a covered van and a CNG-run autorickshaw in Daudkandi upazila of Cumilla this morning.
The deceased were identified as Pijush Mandal, 28, son of late Chittaranjan Mandal, Md Ruhul Amin, 24, son of Mohammad Ruhul Amin, Monir Hossain, 35, son of Mohammad Ohid, Jahanara Begum, 55, and her son Mohammad Shafiullah, 24, hailing from different areas of the upazila. All the victims were passengers of the autorickshaw.
Daudkandi police station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Mozammel Haque said the accident happened around 10 am when the speeding covered van crashed into the autorickshaw coming from the opposite direction on Daudkandi-Chandpur regional road in Mahananda area under Mohammadpur union.
The impact of the accident left four people dead on the spot and three others critically injured, he said.
One of the injured died on the way to Gouripur health complex, he said, adding that bodies were taken to the hospital.
The rest injured were sent to Dhaka for advanced treatment, the OC said, suspecting that the reckless driving of the covered van caused the casualties.
