Detectives in a drive arrested five people while they were allegedly preparing to commit a robbery in Banani area of the capital on Thursday.
The arrestees were identified as Md Masud Rana, 29, Md Rajib Hawlader, 30, Hafizul Matbar, 24, Mohammad Shakil Hossain, 24, and Md Badal, 42.
Additional Police Commissioner (DB) Md Shafiqul Islam disclosed the information at a press briefing held at the DMP Media Centre on Thursday.
Tipped off, a team of the DB Gulshan Division conducted a drive in front of Khayer Palace in Banani around 9:30am and arrested the five suspects while they were preparing to commit a robbery.
Police also recovered a foreign-made pistol, a magazine, a walkie-talkie, a pair of handcuffs bearing the Bangladesh Police emblem, a roll of black Scotch tape, a shopping bag and a microbus from their possession.
Police are investigating whether the suspects are linked to any organised criminal group and whether they were involved in any previous crimes.
Drives are underway to identify and arrest others involved in the gang, police said.
