At least 50 shops were gutted in two separate fire incidents in Nesarabad and Sadar upazilas of Pirojpur district on Tuesday.
Traders claimed that valuables worth around Tk 100 crore were damaged in the devastating fire.
Locals said a fire broke out at a shop at Miarhat Bandar by a fish market in Nesarabad upazila around 5:30 am and spread fast.
Being informed, five firefighting units from three stations in Pirojpur and two stations from nearby Barishal rushed to the scene and brought the blaze under control after three hours of efforts, said Barishal Fire Service’s Acting Assistant Director Md Belal Uddin.

The fire might have erupted from an electric short-circuit from a shop, he said.
Traders said the fire caused damages of 40 shops and losses of around Tk 98 crore.
Moreover, 11 shops were burnt in another fire at Pachpara Bazar under Sadar upazila around 12:30 am.

Two firefighting units brought the flames under control after an hour of efforts, said traders, adding that the fire caused damages of Tk 2 crore.
