Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) Administrator Abdus Salam has expressed optimism that the capital will be transformed into a livable city within the next two years, urging collective civic responsibility and national unity to achieve the goal.
He made the remarks while speaking as chief guest at a seminar titled “Why Does Rain Cause Disruption in Dhaka?” organized by the Urban Development Journalists Forum at the SIDRAP building in the capital on Saturday.
All sacrificial waste to be removed within 8 hours: DSCC Administrator
The DSCC administrator said that Bangladeshi media often portray Dhaka as one of the most polluted, waste-ridden and mosquito-infested cities in the world, but the situation can be improved with joint efforts from both citizens and the authorities.
“If citizens take 50 percent responsibility and the government or city corporation takes the remaining 50 percent, achieving full success will not be impossible,” he said.
Calling for patience for the current administration, Abdus Salam said the present government, which assumed office after the July mass movement, should be given adequate time to deliver results.
“If anyone attempts to destabilize or undermine the government at this stage, the country will suffer. For a healthy democracy, people should allow at least two to three years to assess whether the government can address basic public issues,” he added, urging all political parties to cooperate in controlling dengue and restoring order in Dhaka.
In a separate event held at the Shafiqur Kabir Hall of the Dhaka Reporters Unity (DRU) on Saturday afternoon, the DSCC administrator announced plans to establish a “Nazrul Chattar” near Rabindra Sarobar in Dhanmondi.
He said the initiative is being implemented with the consent of Prime Minister Tarique Rahman” and construction work will begin after the upcoming Eid.
The proposed cultural centre will include a well-equipped library preserving works on National Poet Kazi Nazrul Islam, including his
literature, songs, plays, essays, and biographical materials. It will also provide dedicated facilities for researchers and students.
Paying tribute to the national poet, he said Nazrul’s works continue to inspire people of all ages and promote resistance against injustice and oppression, adding that Nazrul was a true nationalist and humanist writer beyond religious and social divisions.
