Police on Thursday arrested nine people, including an Awami League leader who was snatched in handcuffs during an attack on police in Damurhuda upazila of Chuadanga.
The arrestees are Abu Siddik, president of Chandipur Ward Awami League and a UP member; Fulon Halder, Md Alam, Sonali Halder, Kona Rani, Nasima Akter, Farhad Ali, Firoz Hossain, and Lakshman Halder of Chandipur Haldarpara, and Ashraf Ali of Darshana South Chandrapur.
Earlier, police arrested Abu Siddik and put him in handcuffs when family members and locals allegedly attacked them and snatched him away on Wednesday night.
Two police members were injured in the attack, police said.
Later, police launched an overnight operation and arrested Abu Siddik from the Chuadanga bus stand the following morning.
Eight others were also arrested during the operation.
Meanwhile, a ward BNP president Abdus Samad alleged that he was assaulted and threatened by three people in Chandipur area on Thursday morning. He filed a written complaint with Darshana Police Station over the incident.
Some locals claimed that the assault could be linked to the previous night's incident involving the snatching of Abu Siddik from police custody.
Additional Superintendent of Police of Damurhuda-Jibannagar Circle Md Nurullah said Sub-Inspector Molla Ariful Islam and Constable Aminul Islam were injured in the attack.
Darshana Police Station Inspector (Investigation) Md Mukhlesur Rahman said the complaint filed by BNP leader Abdus Samad would also be investigated and legal action would be taken accordingly.
