Nomination papers of all six candidates including two from BNP and one from Jamaat-e-Islami have been declared valid for Thakurgaon-1 by-election slated for October 29.
Returning Officer and Thakurgaon District Election Officer Md Kamrul Islam declared the nominations valid after scrutiny at the district election office on Tuesday morning.
The candidates are BNP-nominated and district BNP President Mirza Faisal Amin, district BNP Vice President Obaidullah Masud, Jamaat-e-Islami candidate Delowar Hossain, Islami Andolan Bangladesh candidate Md Khademul Islam, Bangladesh Khelafat Andolan candidate Md Abdul Alim Nizami, and Bangladesh Congress candidate Hussain Muhammad Omar Faruk.
Kamrul Islam said six candidates from five political parties collected nomination papers and all of them submitted their nominations.
“Today was the scheduled date for scrutiny of the nomination papers. The candidates of all participating parties along with the law enforcement agencies and others concerned will make efforts to ensure a fair election,” he said.
According to the election schedule announced by the Election Commission, the last date for withdrawal of candidature is October 7 while electoral symbols will be allotted on October 8.
In the national parliamentary election held on February 12 this year, BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir was elected MP from Thakurgaon-1, defeating Jamaat candidate Delawar Hossain.
The seat was later declared vacant after Mirza Fakhrul was elected the 23rd president of Bangladesh.
