An inmate of Bagerhat District Jail died at a hospital on Friday morning after reportedly choking on food while having breakfast inside the prison.
The deceased was identified as Chan Miah Faqir, 44, son of Helal Uddin Fakir of Fulhata village in Morrelganj upazila.
Md Mostafa Kamal, superintendent of Bagerhat District Jail, said food got stuck in Chan Miah's windpipe while he was having breakfast around 7:50am.
Prison officials immediately took him to Bagerhat Sadar Hospital, where he died while undergoing treatment, he said.
Dr Asim Kumar Samaddar, superintendent of Bagerhat Sadar Hospital, said Chan Miah was brought to the hospital from the jail in critical condition and died while receiving treatment in the emergency department.
The jail superintendent said the body will be handed over to the family after an inquest and autopsy in accordance with prison rules.
Chan Miah was sent to jail on September 26 in connection with a case filed under the Special Powers Act.
