Hundreds of officials and employees of Bangladesh Bank officials on Thursday staged a human chain and protest rally to denounce an attack on Nagad administrator Muhammad Badiuzzaman Didar, who is also a director of the central bank
The protest took place at Shapla Chattar in Motijheel near the Bangladesh Bank head office.
Bangladesh Bank director Bayzid Sarkar, Shahriar Siddiqui (assistant spokesperson), Estekmal Hossain, and Officers Welfare Council president Masum Billah spoke at the rally.
Nagad administrator attacked in Dhaka’s Banani
On Wednesday miscreants attacked the car of Badiuzzaman Didar with a hammer in Banani after a team from Anti-Corruption Commission searched the Nagad office and reportedly found irregularities. Nagad is a digital financial service mired into allegations of corruption and irregularities.
Bangladesh Bank assistant spokesperson Shahriar Siddiqui said that the attack on the Nagad administrator was part of the activities of the evil forces across the country. The attackers should be arrested and brought to justice as soon as possible.
The central bank officials said that this attack was not an ordinary incident. The attacks on officials are coming to hinder reforms in the financial sector. They demanded punishment for those involved in the attack.
The Nagad administration uncovered irregularities involving the alleged laundering of Tk 2,300 crore, opening fake accounts and transactions worth Tk 100 crore, and involvement in hundi. This information was uncovered after the ACC operation in Nagad.
A team led by Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) Assistant Directors Ruhul Haque and Tanzir Ahmed conducted an operation at Nagad on Wednesday. Initially, evidence of the laundering of Tk 1,700 crore and irregularities related to e-money of Tk 645 crore was found, said Nagad administrator Didar. The ACC team said that they would collect the relevant documents and investigate the matter.
