The Bangladesh High Commission in Canberra observed National Mourning Day Monday to remember and mourn the brutal assassination of Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman and most of his family on August 15, 1975.
The official programme of mourning at the mission began when the national flag was lowered to half-staff. After that, messages from the president, prime minister, foreign minister and state minister for foreign affairs were read out.

In the evening, Bangladesh High Commissioner to Australia Mohammad Sufiur Rahman, the high commission officials and distinguished members of the Bangladesh community laid wreaths at the portrait of Bangabandhu.

A special prayer was also offered for the salvation of the departed souls of Bangabandhu and his family members and others.

The documentary "Bangabandhu: Forever in Our Hearts" was also screened.
A discussion session was held where the speakers recollected the legacy of the Father of the Nation.
Sufiur Rahman highlighted how Bangabandhu led the Bengalis towards independence and in a way defined Bengali nationalism, according to the Bangladesh mission.
