Bangladesh on Thursday said that the country will consider it if China wants to cooperate with Bangladesh on any development projects on the Bangladesh side of the Teesta river that flows through the northern region from neighbouring India.
“China is one of the major development partners of Bangladesh. They have been supporting Bangladesh in implementing various development projects inside Bangladesh. China has also expressed interest to support development projects on the Bangladesh side of the Teesta river,” Spokesperson at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Seheli Sabrin told reporters at a weekly briefing on Thursday.
In this regard, she said that the relevant ministries and the Economic Relations Division will look into the matter.
Responding to a question, Sabrin said Bangladesh needs to proceed taking geopolitical issues into consideration.
She also described China as a development partner, which is involved in many big infrastructure projects in Bangladesh.
Chinese Ambassador to Bangladesh Yao Wen recently said China is hopeful about starting the Teesta River Comprehensive Management and Restoration Project after the national elections.
"We have already received some proposals on the Teesta river development. The cost of those projects is very high. We want to implement the projects in phases," he said during a question-answer session at a seminar.
