Bangladesh High Commissioner to India Muhammad Iman presided over a discussion meeting attended by officials of the High Commission.
Due to total lockdown and curfew imposed by the Indian government since March 24 to contain the spread of COVID-19, the High Commission had to arrange an in-house programme with the presence of officials only, said the High Commission.
At the beginning of the meeting, a moment of silence was observed as a tribute to the victims of Genocide Day who sacrificed their lives on the black night of March 25, 1971 and contributed to the Independence of Bangladesh.
After that, messagess from the President and Prime Minister of Bangladesh were read out by the High Commissioner.
High Commissioner Imran paid tributes to Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman and martyrs who sacrificed their lives on this night as well as during the nine-month Liberation War.
He mentioned that the significance of the Genocide Day lies in the fact that it reminds the contemporary generations of the bravery of their forefathers and carries a realisation that every killing should be accounted for. "It also makes them aware of the true history of Bangladesh."
To contain the spread of the Coronavirus outbreak, the High Commissioner also requested all to abide by the guidelines of World Health Organization (WHO) and the advisories of host government to keep themselves and the family members safe.
At the end of the programme, a special prayer was offered for the salvation of the soul of martyrs of the Liberation War, Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman and his family members who were killed on August 15, 1975.
