Bangladesh Railway has conducted an eviction drive in the capital's Malibagh area to clear illegal structures built on its land.
The operation took place on Monday led by Divisional Estate Officer and Executive Magistrate Nasir Uddin Mahmud, demolishing over 200 illegal structures, including permanent, semi-permanent, and makeshift establishments. The drive successfully reclaimed approximately 1.2 acres of railway land from illegal occupation.
During the operation, excavators were used to demolish concrete platforms of the structures to prevent the encroachers from rebuilding in the near future.
Earlier on December 5, 2024, the Ministry of Railways issued a public notice urging encroachers to remove illegal structures from railway land by December 10, 2024.
Following this, Bangladesh Railway launched eviction operations outside Dhaka from December 11, reclaiming a significant amount of illegally occupied land in various districts.
The Malibagh operation marks the beginning of eviction drives within the capital.
Bangladesh Railway has stated that the campaign will continue across Dhaka and the rest of the country until all illegally occupied railway land is recovered.
