A Dhaka court on Thursday sent a 17-year-old boy, who was allegedly at the wheel of a car that ran over a construction worker in Baridhara of the city, to a child development centre in Tongi, Gazipur, with the case reportedly being settled for Tk 800,000.

Judge Md Abdul Moktadir of Juvenile Court-8 in Dhaka passed the order when Sub-Inspector Arefin Islam of Gulshan Police Station, also the investigating officer of the case, produced the boy before the court and sought an order to keep him at the child development centre.

Lawyer Alamgir Hossain said Tk 100,000 was provided for the burial expenses, while the remaining amount was given considering the future needs of the elderly parents of the deceased.

Mehedi Hasan, 24, a construction worker, was killed when a private car hit him while he was sitting on a footpath in the Baridhara Diplomatic Zone for resting around 5:00pm on Tuesday.

Later, he was taken to Kurmitola General Hospital, where doctors declared him dead.

Moktadir Islam, Mehedi’s brother and plaintiff of the case, also said the matter has been settled but declined to disclose the amount involved.

People present at the scene detained the teenager who was sitting in the driver’s seat during the accident and handed him over to police.

A case was filed with Gulshan Police Station on Wednesday, naming Akash Mark, driver of the vehicle, as the accused.

As the teenager who was allegedly at the wheel was not named in the case, police faced criticism over the matter.

Gulshan police subsequently arrested the teenager on Wednesday.

Asked about the reported settlement, SI Arefin Islam said he was not aware of it.
