The victim was identified as Abu Bakar Siddique alias Babu, 45, floor-in-charge of the BFDC and son of late Nurul Islam of Senbagh in Noakhali district.
Victim’s wife Alia Ferdousi alleged that a team of Tejgaon Industrial Police Station arrested Babu on Saturday in connection with a case filed against him.
He was physically sound while being taken to the police station, she claimed.
Ferdousi said she along with her two sons has been living at Madartek Adarshpara of Sabujbagh. Her husband had an affair with a woman named Maya. Following a brawl between them, they got separated.
She said rushed to Dhaka Medical College Hospital on Sunday being formed by a BFDC employee over the death of her husband.
She alleged that husband was tortured to death under custody.
Inspector (Operations) of the police station Iftikhar Islam took Babu to the DMCH in an unconscious condition around 3:55am when doctors declared him dead. There were black spots on the neck.
Being informed, Babu’s colleagues went to the DMCH.
One of the colleagues, Abu Sayeed, said a police team went to their office on Sunday morning and informed that Babu committed suicide. “But they didn’t elaborate how he committed suicide. Later, I came to the hospital and found the body.”
He also said they received a phone call from the police station around 8pm on Saturday when police informed them that a man named Babu was arrested in a case filed under the Digital Security Act and the plaintiff’s name is Roksana Akhter Maya.
Contacted, Deputy Commissioner (Tejgaon Division) of Dhaka Metropolitan Police Biplab Bijoy told UNB that it was an incident of suicide.
He, however, said a probe committee has been formed to look into the incident. “The mystery behind the incident would be unearthed on completion of the investigation,” he said.
