In a near-clean sweep, the BNP-backed panel secured 13 out of 14 posts in the Supreme Court Bar Association (SCBA) election for the 2026-2027 term, while the Jamaat-backed panel won a member post.
AM Mahbub Uddin Khokon of the Jatiyatabadi Ainjibi Panel, also known as Blue Panel, was elected president, while Mohammad Ali from the same panel won the secretary post.
The results were announced around 2:00am on Friday by Justice Miftah Uddin Chowdhury, the convener of the election sub-committee.
A total of 4,048 votes were cast in the two-day election held on May 13 and 14 at the SCBA auditorium. Lawyers backed by the Awami League, which faces a ban on its activities, did not participate in the election.
Apart from the president and secretary posts, Md Magfur Rahman Sheikh and Md Shahjahan were elected vice presidents, while Md Ziaur Rahman won the treasurer post, all from the BNP-supported panel.
Maqsud Ullah and Mohammad Shamsul Islam Mukul were elected assistant secretaries.
Members elected from the BNP-backed panel include HM Sanjid Siddiqui, AKM Azad Hossain, Md Kabir Hossain, Md Tipu Sultan, Md Zia Uddin Mia and Wahid Afroz Chowdhury.
Md Azim Uddin Patwary from the Lawyers’ Unity Panel, or Green Panel, backed by the Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami, won one of the seven member posts.
Voting began at 10:00am on both days and continued until 5:00pm with a one-hour lunch break.
