Begum Rokeya University, Rangpur (BRUR) has permanently expelled 11 individuals, including three faculty members and eight officials and staff, over their involvement in the killing of student Abu Sayed during the 2024 Anti-Discrimination Student Movement.
The punitive measure was approved during the 123rd meeting of the BRUR Syndicate, the university’s highest policy-making body, on Wednesday night,Vice-Chancellor Prof. Dr. Md. Shawkat Ali confirmed on Thursday afternoon.
The three permanently expelled faculty members are Mashiur Rahman, former associate professor of the Mathematics Department; Asaduzzaman Mandal alias Asad, associate professor of Public Administration; and Shariful Islam, associate professor of Political Science and former proctor.
The expelled employees include former Assistant Registrar Rafiul Hasan Russel, Assistant Registrar Hafijur Rahman alias Tufan, Section Officer Moniruzzaman Palash, Office Assistant-cum-Computer Operator Mahabubar Rahman alias Babu, Security Guard Nur Alam Mia, and MLSS staff members Mohammad Nurunnabi Mandal and A K M Amir Hossain, alongside an 11th individual confirmed by university administration.
BRUR Registrar Prof. Dr. Md. Ferdous Rahman, said administrative procedures are underway to execute the Syndicate's order. Terming Abu Sayed’s death a momentous and painful chapter in the university's history, VC Prof. Shawkat Ali reaffirmed that disciplinary actions were taken strictly in accordance with university statutes following an internal probe.
Abu Sayed, a key coordinator of the quota reform movement and a student of the English Department, was shot dead by police on July 16, 2024, near the university's main gate. Footage of Sayed standing unarmed with outstretched arms facing police gunfire went viral, sparking nationwide protests that ultimately led to the fall of the Sheikh Hasina-led government.
