Parliamentarians will no longer be able to import cars duty-free. Taxes and VAT will be imposed. In the proposed budget for the fiscal year 2024-25, this facility has been abolished, and MPs will have to pay taxes and VAT on car imports.
On Thursday (June 6), under the chairmanship of Speaker Shirin Sharmin Chaudhury, the budget was presented in the National Parliament with the presence of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina by Finance Minister Abul Hasan Mahmood Ali. Prior approval was obtained from the cabinet, and later the President Mohammad Shahabuddin endorsed the proposal.
Currently, parliamentarians can import one car duty-free, on the so-called 'MP ticket'. However, to reduce inequality, the Prime Minister has agreed to abolish this facility. In the proposed budget for the fiscal year 2024-25, an additional 25% supplementary duty and 15% VAT have been imposed on MPs' car imports. Additionally, cars previously enjoying duty-free benefits for high-tech parks will now be subject to duties.
A budget of Tk 7 lakh 97 thousand crore has been presented by Finance Minister Abul Hasan Mahmud Ali for the fiscal year 2024-25.
