Events, including rally and discussion, were organised marking the day.
With the slogan ‘The advancement of girl child - a new dimension for the country’, the events were organised as part of Care’s IMAGINE Project, said a press release.
Inspiring Married Adolescent Girls to Imagine New Empowered Futures (IMAGINE) is funded by Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. It is implemented by Mahideb Jubo Somaj Kallayan Somity (MJSKS) in Belgacha and Punchgachi union of Kurigram.
The aim of the project is to delay first birth at least six months or more above the average among the married adolescent girls of 15-19 years in intervention areas by 2021.
Md Jafor Ali, Kurigram Zilla Parishad Chairman, said, “Adolescent girls aren’t staying behind. They can exceed expectations if they get the opportunity. They can play a vital role in socio-economic development of the country.”
He suggested scaling up the IMAGINE project to cover more adolescent girls in the community.
The discussion session started with a welcome speech from Amal Kumar Majumder, Director, MJSKS where he highlighted the impact of such schemes.
Kurigram Civil Surgeon Dr Md Habubur Rahman, Deputy Director of Family Planning Dr Md Nazrul Islam, Principal of Technical Training Center Md Ainul Haque, among others, took part in the programme.
Representatives from the local group shared struggles and aspirations of the local girls.
