A case has been filed against a college teacher in Sirajganj over the alleged attempted rape of a ninth-grade schoolgirl from the Mahato community in Raiganj upazila, police said.
The accused is Jahurul Islam Khokon, 42, said Raiganj Police Station OC Ahsanuzzaman.
OC Ahsanuzzaman said the accused had been providing private coaching to students at Expert KG School in the Nimgachi Bazar area of Raiganj for a long time while serving as a teacher at Bishmadanga Girls School and College in Tarash upazila.
The victim, a ninth-grade student from the Mahato community and a student of the same educational institution, regularly attended his coaching classes.
Police said the teacher had allegedly harassed the girl and made inappropriate proposals to her on several occasions.
On June 10, the victim went to the coaching center as usual. Since there were no more students at that time, the accused took the advantage and tried to violate the girl.
Hearing her screams, local people rushed to the spot and rescued her. However, Khokon managed to flee the scene.
Following the incident, a case was filed against him at the police station on Wednesday night under the Prevention of Violence against Women and Children Act on charges of attempted rape.
Investigating Officer SI Neelkomal Chakraborty said efforts are underway to arrest the accused.
