A Chandpur tribunal on Monday sentenced a man to death for killing his wife for dowry in Chandpur Kachua upazila in March 2011.
Judge Jannatul Ferdaus Chowdhury of Chandpur Women and Child Abuse Prevention Tribunal handed down the sentence in presence of the convict, said Khorshed Alam Shawon, assistant public prosecutor (APP), at the court.

The court also fined convict Abdus Salam, son of Ayat Ali of Tetaiya village of Kachua North Union, Tk 50,000.
According to the case statement, Abdus Salam and Najma got married on April 10, 2009.
On October 10, 2011, Salam locked into a quarrel with his wife Nazma for Tk 200,000 dowry. At one point, Salam poured kerosene on Najma and set her on fire, leaving her seriously injured.

She was first taken to Kachua Upazila Health Complex and later to Dhaka Medical College Hospital. Najma died 4 days later on October 14 while undergoing treatment in the burn unit of the hospital.
A case was filed at Kachua police station under the Prevention of Torture against Women and Children Act, following a complaint lodged by Najma's elder brother Md. Saidul Islam.
Later, police arrested Salam in the case.

Nural Islam Khan, Sub-Inspector (SI) and investigative officer of the case filed the charge sheet in the court on January 17, 2012.
