At least 10 people were injured in renewed clashes between residents of two villages in Companiganj Upazila following an attack on a man identified as Abul Hossain.
The tension spread in Khagail village and Gourinagar village from around 5:00pm on Friday.
Abul Hossain, 40, son of Akrom Ali of Gourinagar village and was a truck driver.
According to locals, an altercation broke out between two men from Khagail and Gourinagar villages over tying cattle at a cattle market in Khagail Bazar of the upazila. The dispute later escalated into a clash.
As a continuation of the conflict, Abul Hossain was allegedly attacked by rivals while returning home from the Dhopagul area of Sylhet at around 12:30am on Thursday night and was critically injured.
Later he was rescued and admitted to Sylhet MAG Osmani Medical College Hospital.
Rumors of his death spread in the area around 3:00pm on Friday and triggering fresh tension between the two villages.
However, police said Abul Hossain is still undergoing treatment at the hospital.
Following the rumours, angry residents of Gourinagar village allegedly attacked several houses in Khagail village and injured at least 10 people.
Police have been deployed at the scene to bring the situation under control.
Sujan Chandra, Officer-in-Charge (Investigation) of Companiganj Police Station, said police rushed to the spot after receiving the information. “The situation is now somewhat normal,” he added.
