A police constable who was critically injured after being hit by a bus while chasing a suspected mugger in Chattogram city on Sunday died at Chattogram Medical College Hospital (CMCH) on Monday.
The deceased was identified as Al Amin Sardar, 25, a member of the Police Order Management Division of Chattogram Metropolitan Police (CMP), who was attached to Kotwali Police Station. Hailing from Madaripur district, he joined Bangladesh Police in 2022.
He succumbed to his injuries at the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) of the hospital, said Officer-in-Charge of Kotwali Police Station Zahedul Kabir.
Al Amin, along with several other police officials, was on duty at the Ispahani checkpoint near the WASA intersection on Sunday morning. They stopped three young men around 6:30am after finding their movements suspicious.
At one stage, one of them started fleeing, prompting Al Amin to chase him on a motorcycle.
While chasing, a speeding bus hit Al Amin from behind, leaving him critically injured. He was dragged along the road for over 50 feet.
Al Amin was taken to the CMCH in critical condition and admitted to the ICU.
Police arrested bus driver Mosharraf, 38, and his assistant Joy Das, 30, in connection with the incident.
A case was filed against them.
Meanwhile, CMP Commissioner Hasan Md Showkat Ali expressed deep condolences over Al Amin's death, saying his dedication to duty and sacrifice will remain an example of commitment to public service.
