An initiative has been taken to introduce an e-Parliament system aimed at establishing a paperless, modern and technology-driven Bangladesh Parliament.
The initiative was discussed when Deputy Speaker and Chairman of the Library Committee of the 13th Parliament Barrister Kaysar Kamal, along with committee members Nayab Yusuf Ahmed and ABM Mosharraf Hossain, paid a courtesy call on Speaker Hafiz Uddin Ahmad on Sunday.
During the meeting, emphasis was placed on implementing the e-Parliament system to make parliamentary activities faster, more modern and technology-oriented.
The proposed system will have both Bangla and English versions and is expected to facilitate the management, preservation and exchange of parliamentary documents and information in a faster and more efficient manner.
The Speaker directed that a committee, headed by the Deputy Speaker, be formed to oversee the implementation of the e-Parliament system.
The committee will review the proposed system’s structure, implementation process, required technological infrastructure and other related issues before taking necessary steps.
The Speaker also directed that a presentation on the e-Parliament system be arranged towards the end of September. The presentation will outline the system’s operational procedures, technological capabilities, implementation plan and other key aspects.
The meeting noted that implementation of the e-Parliament system would be an important milestone for the government. Once introduced, various parliamentary activities and documents will be managed digitally, reducing paper use while saving time and administrative costs.
The system is also expected to improve the speed, efficiency and coordination of parliamentary activities.
It was also decided to contact the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), donor countries and development agencies to secure the necessary technical and other support for implementing the project. Their assistance may be sought at subsequent stages, as required.
The e-Parliament initiative is being considered an important and timely step towards establishing a paperless and technology-driven Parliament.
Relevant officials of the Bangladesh Parliament Secretariat were present at the meeting.
