Health and Family Welfare Minister Sardar Md Sakhawat Husain on Wednesday said the talent, skills, patriotism and dedication of the country’s doctors to serving humanity are a matter of pride for the nation.
He said doctors risk their lives to serve people even in times of crisis, describing their commitment as a major achievement for the country.
The minister made the remarks while speaking as the chief guest at the inaugural ceremony of the seventh annual conference of the Haematology Society of Bangladesh, titled ‘HaematoCon 2026’, held at the Shaheed Abu Sayeed International Convention Centre in Dhaka on Wednesday night.
The minister said people might not always listen to him, but they listen when a doctor speaks, as doctors’ talent and competence are widely respected.
He said the country’s doctors were serving people with skill and dedication and had a deep love for the country. They performed their duties as vigilant guardians of public health without expecting anything in return, he added.
Sakhawat Hossain said he felt proud of the country’s doctors and highlighted their skills and contributions even when speaking abroad.
Emphasising the need to improve treatment for complex blood disorders such as thalassaemia and leukaemia, the minister said initiatives had been taken to strengthen the country’s haematology sector and ensure access to specialist medical services in different regions.
To this end, he said, arrangements would be made to deploy haematologists to different parts of the country after discussions with the president and general secretary of the Haematology Society of Bangladesh within the next week.
Sakhawat Hossain also said various initiatives had been taken to modernise the country’s healthcare system and make it suitable for contemporary needs, including the installation of radiotherapy machines across the country.
He stressed the need for collective efforts by all concerned to ensure advanced treatment for patients suffering from complex diseases such as thalassaemia and leukaemia.
Director General of the Directorate General of Medical Education Professor Dr Nazmul Hossain and other prominent doctors from across the country were present at the programme.
