The Department of Environment (DoE), in conjunction with the upazila administration, demolished two illegal lead factories in the Sagardighi area of Ghatail, Tangail, on Wednesday.
Led by Executive Magistrate Kishore Kumar Das and guided by Environment Adviser Syeda Rizwana Hasan, the operation followed complaints from YouthNet Global about the factories' toxic emissions, which had caused serious health issues and environmental damage in nearby villages.
The factories, which had been burning old batteries to produce lead, were linked to respiratory problems among locals and the deaths of livestock and wildlife. Despite past complaints, no action had been taken until this operation, during which no factory owners were present.
