Dr Niaz Abdur Rahman, a pioneer of modern retinal surgery in Bangladesh and a prominent ophthalmologist, has received the APVRS 2026 Distinguished Service Award from the Asia Pacific Vitreo Retina Society (APVRS), one of the leading professional organisations in the Asia-Pacific region.
He received the award in recognition of his long-standing contributions to the treatment of vitreoretinal diseases, professional leadership and his role in advancing retinal care in the Asia-Pacific region and beyond.
The award was presented at a special ceremony during the APVRS 2026 Gold Coast Congress in Gold Coast, Australia, on Friday (August 28).
The ceremony was held from 3:45pm to 4:45pm local time at the Presentation Stage of the Exhibition Hall at the Gold Coast Convention and Exhibition Centre.
According to the APVRS, Dr Niaz Abdur Rahman was selected for the award for his “exemplary leadership and sustained contributions”.
Throughout his career, he has played a significant role in developing modern vitreoretinal treatment and surgery in Bangladesh and has contributed to bringing retinal care in the country up to international standards.
Dr Niaz Abdur Rahman is a founder and former managing director of Bangladesh Eye Hospital and Institute.
