Dhaka Reporters Unity (DRU) has launched its first-ever Debating Club aimed at developing journalists’ logical, analytical and intellectual skills.
The inaugural ceremony of the Debating Club was held at the Shafiqul Kabir Auditorium of DRU on Sunday afternoon.
State Minister for Primary and Mass Education Bobby Hajjaj, MP, attended the event as the chief guest.
He said DRU has long provided a platform where programmes can be held without obstruction and expressed hope that it would remain open to all voices, including criticism of the government.
“We want DRU to give that opportunity to those who want to speak against our government. If mistakes are not pointed out, how will we correct them? Everyone has the right to highlight the government’s mistakes for the sake of a welfare state,” he said, adding that he would support initiatives of the debating club, including sponsorship.
Debate for Democracy Chairman Hasan Ahmed Chowdhury Kiron said DRU is one of the largest and most united organisations of journalists in the country.
