The Dhaka University syndicate has declared Md Rashed Khan the general secretary (GS) of the Dhaka University Central Students’ Union (DUCSU) from the 2019 election, revoking the election of then Bangladesh Chhatra League secretary Golam Rabbani to the post.

The decision was taken at a syndicate meeting held on Monday night, the university’s acting registrar confirmed.

Rashed Khan was the second-highest vote-getter in the 2019 DUCSU election.

Earlier, Dhaka University formed a probe committee following allegations over Rabbani’s studentship. Based on the committee’s recommendations and a subsequent decision of the Academic Council, his MPhil studentship was found to be illegal, according to a university source.

The source said Rabbani also failed to provide a satisfactory response to a show-cause notice issued to him. His position as DUCSU GS was consequently declared vacant.

Following a legal opinion from the university’s legal adviser, the syndicate declared Rashed the GS, the registrar said.

Following the decision, Rashed visited Dhaka University and met with the vice-chancellor and pro-vice-chancellors.

Sharing photos of the meeting on his verified Facebook account, Rashed wrote, “Greeting exchange with the vice chancellor and the pro vice chancellors after announcing me DUCSU GS. Countless thanks to Allah.”

Rashed is currently serving as a political assistant to the prime minister of Bangladesh.
