Sarba Mitra Chakma, a member of the Dhaka University Central Students' Union (DUCSU), forced approximately thirty outsiders, mostly teenagers and young men, to hold their ears for playing on the university's central field.
A video of the incident went viral on social media on Sunday, sparking widespread criticism across various platforms.
The footage shows a row of about 30 youths, estimated to be between 10 and 20 years old, performing ear-holding squats on one side of the central field. Sarba Mitra Chakma is seen standing in front of them holding a stick. Reports indicate the video was recorded in January around 6 PM at the Dhaka University central field.
While the university administration has repeatedly prohibited outsiders from playing on the field, teenagers and young men from surrounding areas frequently frequent the grounds.
Protest at DU over Jamaat leader's remarks targeting female students
Regarding the incident, DUCSU member Sarba Mitra Chakma stated, "Students from outside come here to play. When asked to leave, they throw stones and brickbats. The staff here cannot control them. Furthermore, our students' wallets and mobile phones are often stolen. They have been warned repeatedly because of these issues."
He further added, "I believe the Treasurer is most at fault here. Files were sent to him multiple times to approve a boundary wall, but he did not authorize it. Instead, he returned the files. Students complain to us constantly."
When asked if he specifically ordered the punishment, he replied, "Yes, I gave the order. Members of the proctorial team and other staff were present at the time."
When questioned about his authority to impose such punishment, he said, "If no sustainable solution is provided, I have to take action. Outsiders are entering repeatedly; what else would you do? They were directed not to play on this field long before DUCSU was formed, yet they do not listen. You have to understand the perspective of the university students."
Victory Day observed at Dhaka University through numerous programs
In response to the matter, Dhaka University Proctor Professor Saifuddin Ahmed said, "I am not aware of any such video. However, there are rules for everything. If anyone wants to play, they must obtain permission according to the regulations."
When asked whether a member has the right to force someone to hold their ears, he added, "I cannot comment on this without knowing exactly what transpired with the member. I will speak with him regarding the matter."
