Import-export activities between Bangladesh and India through Benapole, the country’s largest land port, will remain suspended for seven days on the occasion of Eid-ul-Azha.
Port, customs and goods clearance operations will remain closed from May 25 to May 31, officials said on Saturday.
However, movement of passport-holding passengers between the two countries will continue as usual during the period, said Badruzzaman Boni, general secretary of the Benapole C&F Agents Staff Association.
Import-export and goods clearance activities will resume from the morning of June 1, he added.
The customs house, however, will remain open on a limited scale except on Eid day.
Benapole Port Director (Traffic) Md. Shamim Hossain said security has been strengthened in the port area to prevent theft, sabotage and any untoward incidents during the Eid holidays.
He said port security personnel and Ansar members will patrol the area round the clock, while members of Benapole Port Police Station will also remain on duty.
Necessary support will also be provided if any importer needs to unload goods on an emergency basis, he added.
Benapole Port Police Station Officer-in-Charge Ashraf Hossain said additional surveillance measures have been taken in the port area during the holidays.
Meanwhile, Benapole Checkpost Immigration Police Inspector (Investigation) Syed Mortaza Ali said passenger movement through the immigration checkpost will continue uninterrupted despite the suspension of trade activities.
He added that additional officers and staff have been kept ready to handle increased passenger pressure during Eid.
