An elderly man was seriously injured and a man was arrested with a firearm following a land boundary dispute in Bhandaria upazila of Pirojpur on Friday morning.
The incident took place around 7:30am in Dhawa village under Dhawa Union No. 5, creating panic in the area.
The injured, Md Almagir Hossain Sardar (65), son of late Abdur Rashid Sardar of the same village, is currently undergoing treatment at Bhandaria Upazila Health Complex.
Police arrested the accused, Md Rofiqul Islam Samrat (60), son of late Md Ali Hawlader of Dhawa village, with a pistol following the incident.
Locals and police said Samrat went to Almagir Sardar’s house over a dispute regarding land boundary, which led to an argument. At one point, Almagir’s grandson Tamim Sardar (15) pushed him, escalating the situation.
Samrat then allegedly fired two blank shots from his pistol (No. FFR-7257), causing panic in the area. When Almagir tried to intervene, Samrat reportedly struck him on the right side of the head with the pistol’s butt, leaving him seriously injured and bleeding.
During a subsequent scuffle, locals managed to detain Samrat and later handed him over to police. The injured was rescued and admitted to hospital by his relatives.
The victim’s daughter Fatema Akter filed a case at Bhandaria Police Station, naming Samrat as the main accused and two others as unidentified accused in an attempted murder case.
Officer-in-Charge of Bhandaria Police Station Dewan Joglul Hasan confirmed the incident, saying the accused has been sent to jail through Pirojpur court. Investigation is ongoing.
