State Minister for Youth and Sports Md. Aminul Haque on Thursday urged people across the country to celebrate the ongoing FIFA World Cup in a spirit of joy and sportsmanship, warning against violence and disorder over support for rival teams.
Speaking in Parliament during a discussion on a private member's resolution moved by BNP MP from Sylhet-3 Mohammed Abdul Malique, the State Minister expressed concern over reports of fatalities and clashes linked to World Cup celebrations.
He said Bangladesh was currently gripped by "World Cup fever", with people from all walks of life, particularly the youth, enthusiastically watching matches at home and on giant LED screens set up in different areas.
"The whole country is enjoying the World Cup. Our young generation, the future of the nation, is passionately following the tournament," he said.
However, Aminul said the excitement surrounding the global football event had unfortunately led to incidents of violence in several places.
"We have seen a number of violent incidents and disturbances over the World Cup. According to the latest information available to me today, 10 people have lost their lives. This is extremely unfortunate," he told the House.
Describing football as a source of entertainment and happiness, the State Minister urged supporters of all teams to celebrate the tournament responsibly.
"Football is a joyful game. It is meant purely for enjoyment. There will naturally be excitement and enthusiasm, and in many households the friendly rivalry between Brazil and Argentina supporters continues," he said.
Referring to the tournament's progress, Aminul noted that Brazil supporters were disappointed after their team's elimination, while Argentina fans were still hopeful of lifting the World Cup trophy.
He said the festive atmosphere surrounding the traditional Brazil-Argentina rivalry in Bangladesh should remain peaceful and enjoyable.
"I appeal to the people of the country, through you, Mr Speaker, to ensure that this celebration remains a festival of joy. No one should create disorder or violence over the game, and no more lives should be lost because of such incidents," he said.
The State Minister called on all football fans to uphold the true spirit of sportsmanship and celebrate the World Cup in a peaceful and responsible manner.
