The local government, rural development, and cooperatives ministry has suspended a union parishad (UP) chairman of Barishal for being imprisoned on charges of extortion.
After taking control of the Barishal Central Bus Station in 2019, the suspended Kamal Hossain Mollah Liton was accused of being involved in massive extortion at transport counters.
Liton is the chairman of Barishal Sadar’s Kashipur union and also the Awami League general secretary of the area.
He is the president of Barishal Tempu Malik-Sramik Union, too.
Barishal Sadar Upazila Nirbahi Officer Md Munibur Rahman confirmed this on Monday.
Munibur said the ministry suspended Liton on November 3. “He was also served a notice to show cause within 10 days as to why he would not be expelled permanently.”
