Five members of Gazipur Metropolitan Police (GMP) have been suspended following the escape of an alleged top drug dealer of Mohammadpur in the capital while being taken from a Dhaka court to Kashimpur Jail in Gazipur.
Md Taherul Huq Chouhan, acting commissioner of GMP, said a three-member committee has also been formed to investigate the incident.
“An accused escaped while being taken from the Dhaka court to Kashimpur Jail. According to our preliminary findings, the prisoner repeatedly asked to use the restroom. He escaped after being taken out of the vehicle,” he said.
Prison sources said 30 accused were taken from Kashimpur Jail to the Dhaka Metropolitan Court on Sunday morning for court proceedings.
In the afternoon, while they were being taken back to the jail after the hearing, one of the accused, identified as Raja alias “Pichchi Raja”, an accused in an explosive substances case, started shouting that he needed to use the restroom.
When the prison van reached the Baimail area of Gazipur city, the accompanying sub-inspector took Raja to a nearby restroom. He, however, managed to flee, outsmarting the police officer.
