A Bogura tribunal on Sunday sentenced five people to death and five others to 10 years’ imprisonment for killing an eight-year-old boy in 2018.
Judge of the Bogura Women and Children Repression Prevention Tribunal-1 Anwarul Haque handed down the punishment.
The condemned convicts are Abul Kalam Azad, Sagar, Selim Islam, Mehedi Hasan and Raju Islam of Khadas village in Shajahanpur upazila.
Of them, Sagar and Selim were tried in absentia.
Those who received 10-year imprisonment are Sajib Hasan, Mafizul Islam, Zahid Hasan, Borhan Ali and Bayezid Hasan of the village.
According to the prosecution, Enamul Haque, father of victim Rifat Hossain, had been living abroad.
After his return from abroad, his neighbour Azad repeatedly asked him for money on different occasions.
On July 15, 2018, Azad again demanded Tk 1 lakh from Enamul as a loan. However, Enamul refused to give him the money.
Later that afternoon, Enamul's eldest son Rifat Hossain went missing, prompting Enamul to file a General Diary (GD) in this regard.
Rifat’s body was found beneath a bridge in the neighbouring village of Poyalgacha, three days after he went missing.
Later, Enamul filed a case at Shajahanpur Police Station against 11 people in this regard.
Among the accused, Masud Rana died during the trial proceedings.
