The customs authorities seized a huge amount of foreign cigarettes, liquor, cosmetics and other valuables from Khulna-bound ‘Bandhan Express’ train from India at Benapole Rail Station in Jashore on Thursday morning.
However, no one was arrested in this connection.
Abdur Rashid Miah, joint commissioner at Benapole Customs House, said they conducted a drive in the train with the help of the members of Border Guard Bangladesh, Rapid Action Battalion and police at around 11am.
A huge amount of foreign cigarettes, liquor, three-piece sets, sarees, cosmetics, food items and other products worth Tk 70 lakh were seized from various luggage of the passengers who abandoned those sensing presence of the law enforcers, he said.
M Naziur Rahman, commandant of the Rab-6, said the anti-smuggling drive will continue.
