Police have produced four people arrested for their alleged involvement in the murder of Yashat Shahriar Opratim, the only son of Cumilla University (CoU) Bangla Department Associate Professor Dr Nahida Begum, before a court on Sunday evening.
The accused are Saiful Islam Tuhin, Mozammel Hossain Fahad, Md Kamrul Hasan and Siam.
Public Prosecutor of the Cumilla District and Sessions Judge’s Court Advocate Kaimul Haque Rinku said the accused were produced before the court in the sensational murder case and agreed to give confessional statements.
Following the legal procedure, a magistrate gave them three hours to reflect before recording their statements, he said.
Describing the incident as a gruesome and heartbreaking murder that has shocked the country, the PP said the accused have the right to legal assistance, but no lawyer from the Cumilla Bar has so far submitted any power of attorney or petition on their behalf or against them.
He expressed hope that, following a fair investigation, the perpetrators would receive the highest and exemplary punishment for the brutal murder.
At a press conference, police said Saiful Islam Tuhin took Opratim to an isolated forested area in the Sananda area of Lalmai Hill at around 3:15pm on Sept 18, 2026.
Police said Opratim was taken there through a ploy with the intention of snatching the iPhone he was carrying.
