The current government believes in democratic values and accountability, not in threats or intimidation, according to Dr. Rashed Al Mahmud Titumir, the Prime Minister’s Adviser on Economic and Planning Affairs.

“Those of us who work in public offices are public officials, and we are obliged to answer any questions from the people. We want to uphold this culture of accountability,” he said.

He made the remarks at a reception held on Monday afternoon at the Professor Muzaffar Ahmed Chowdhury Auditorium of the Social Sciences Building of Dhaka University.

The Department of Development Studies organized the reception to honour Prof. Titumir, its former chairman, following his appointment as the Prime Minister’s Adviser.

In his speech, he emphasized the importance of open debate in policymaking and encouraged students to ask questions. He said anyone can raise questions about the policy framework of the current government, adding that accountability can be ensured through questioning.

Recalling his 23-year teaching career at the university, Prof. Titumir said, “The greatest achievement and celebration for a teacher is the success of their students.”

“My students are now working as researchers and teachers at leading universities around the world. This is what enlightens and inspires me the most,” he added.

Calling for greater recognition of grassroots knowledge gained through experience and labour rather than placing excessive emphasis on theoretical complexities, he said no work in society should be considered insignificant.

“The country cannot function without the active contributions of people at every level of society, from cleaners to professionals in various fields,” he said.

DU Vice-Chancellor Professor Dr A B M Obaidul Islam, former Vice-Chancellor and Professor of the Department of Development Studies Dr Niaz Ahmed Khan, teachers of the department, and current and former students were also present at the program.
