A high-level government delegation on Wednesday inspected several proposed sites for alternative bus terminals and temporary bus depots, as part of the government's plan to ease traffic congestion in the capital and improve the public transport system.
Prime Minister Tarique Rahman, at a meeting on modernising Dhaka's traffic management and easing congestion held at the Cabinet Division in the Secretariat on June 15, directed the authorities to relocate the capital's four major bus terminals as quickly as possible.
The inspection began around 3:00pm, BNP Media Cell member Sayrul Kabir Khan said.
The delegation first visited Sector 19 of Purbachal and then Diabari of Uttara.
Later, they went to Chunkutia in Keraniganj, the proposed relocation site for Gabtoli Bus Terminal.
From there, the team went to Tegharia Underpass (opposite the jail at Baghair), Hasnabad (Ikuria)-Kanchpur, and Fulbaria as part of the proposed terminal relocation plan.
Pabna-5 lawmaker and transport leader Shamsur Rahman Shimul Biswas, Senior Secretary of the Home Ministry Manzur Morshed Chowdhury, Rajdhani Unnayan Kartripakkha Chairman Engineer Md Riazul Islam, Dhaka Metropolitan Police Commissioner Mosleh Uddin Ahmed, Dhaka Superintendent of Police Shamima Pervin, Dhaka Bus Owners' Association General Secretary Saiful Alam and Bangladesh Road Transport Workers Federation General Secretary Humayun Kabir Khan were present.
