Govt targets 10,000MW solar power generation in five years: Posts & ICT Ministerf

The government has set a target to generate 10,000 megawatts of electricity from solar power plants over the next five years, Minister of Posts, Telecommunications and Information Technology Faqir Mahbub Anam said on Wednesday.

“The government has taken initiatives to set up solar power plants by using the country’s fallow and uncultivated land,” he said.

The minister made the remarks while speaking at the inauguration of a one-megawatt rooftop solar power plant at Bangladesh Cable Shilpa Limited in Khulna’s Shiromoni area in the afternoon.

He stressed the need to give the highest priority to solar power and the use of solar panels to ensure an uninterrupted electricity supply.

He said the government would provide loans at a one percent interest rate as an incentive to members of the public who set up solar power plants.

The government will also purchase surplus electricity generated by such plants at Tk 10.50 per unit, he said.

The minister urged the authorities concerned to carry out extensive publicity campaigns so that people can learn about and benefit from the initiative.
