A grocer died in a firing in Bahaddarhat area of Chandgaon police station in Chattogram city on Saturday night, said police.
Mohammad Shahid, 45, succumbed to his injuries while undergoing treatment at private Parkview Hospital in Chawkbazar area of the city. The victim was a grocery store owner in the Bahaddarhat area.
Locals and witnesses said mobs attacked the residence of Chattogram City Corporation Mayor Rezaul Karim in Bahaddarhat from a rally of Anti-Discrimination Quota Movement around 8pm.
After the attackers left, members of Bangladesh Chhatra League and Jubo League arrived in the Bahaddarthat and allegedly began firing indiscriminately, injuring four people.
Later, police also arrived at the scene and fired shots. However, it remains unclear whose bullets killed the grocer.
However, police reported that around 8:30pm four injured were rushed to Chittagong Medical College Hospital. One of them was later transferred to Parkview Hospital and admitted to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) where he succumbed to his injuries around 10:30pm.
Hospital sources confirmed that Shahid died from gunshot wounds, but it is still unclear what type of bullet caused his injuries.
Chattogram Metropolitan Police's Additional Police Commissioner (Crime) Abdul Mannan Mia confirmed the matter claiming that police didn’t fire any shots in Bahaddarhat; instead, they lobbed tear gas shells and batons to disperse the protesters.
He said they would look for the matter.
