Sirajganj-5 MP Amirul Islam Khan Alim has called for steps to revive the country’s handloom industry.
He made the remarks on Saturday afternoon at Tamai Satrang Shopping Complex at an exchange meeting organised by the Tamai Handloom and Powerloom Owners’ Association.
The meeting was organised to strengthen unity and protect the rights of weavers in the handloom-rich upazilas of Chauhali, Enayetpur and Belkuchi in Sirajganj.
Solaiman Hossain Molla, president of the association, chaired the meeting.
Speaking as the chief guest, the MP stressed the need to revive the handloom industry and said various plans would be adopted to achieve the goal.
He said the region is renowned for its handloom industry and that steps would be taken to improve facilities for loom owners to protect both owners and workers from financial losses.
Such measures are also necessary to preserve the region’s identity and protect its economic interests, he said.
Baidyanath Roy, general secretary of the Tamai Handloom and Powerloom Owners’ Association; Gafur Khan, joint general secretary; and BNP leaders Boni Amin, Atiqul Islam Mallick and Ohidul Islam Khan, among others, also spoke at the meeting.
