A massive rush of Dhaka-bound passengers caused chaos at Paturia Ferry Terminal in Manikganj on Friday afternoon, with commuters reportedly being charged far above the official fare.
Hundreds of passengers returning from Eid across 21 southwestern districts arrived via Daulatdia Ferry in Rajbari, using buses, microbuses, private cars, and cut-line services. By late afternoon, the terminal was overcrowded, causing a shortage of vehicles for Dhaka-bound travelers.
Passengers alleged that fares from Paturia to Savar and Nabinagar, officially 150 taka, were being charged at 400 taka, while fares to Gabtali, officially 200 taka, went up to 500 taka.
Amid the transport crunch, many travelers were left waiting on roadsides or at terminals, while some risked their safety by boarding open trucks to reach their destinations.
Shibalay Upazila Executive Officer Monisha Rani said the surge in passengers caused vehicle shortages, prompting some transport workers to demand higher fares. She added that mobile courts have been deployed to curb fare hikes, and several drivers have already been fined.
As of 8:30 pm, hundreds of passengers were still waiting for transport at Paturia Ferry Terminal.
