History helps people understand society, develop values and build a sense of responsibility towards the country and the nation, Deputy Speaker Barrister Kayser Kamal said on Wednesday.
“History is not just taught to memorise past events. It teaches us why an event happened, what its social, political and economic context was, and what lessons can be learned from that experience for the future. History is the mirror of a nation’s identity. A nation that does not know its history cannot confidently build its future,” he said while addressing a freshers' reception ceremony for the 20th semester batch of the History Department at the TSC auditorium of Dhaka University.
Addressing the newcomers, he said, “Like you, I was a student of the History Department of Dhaka University in the 1989-90 academic year. The memories of student life never fade. Today, being present in this auditorium, I feel as if I have returned to those days. Many of my respected teachers are present here. Their presence has deeply moved me.”
He further said, “By studying in the History Department, you will acquire logical thinking, analytical skills, research-mindedness and a mindset of truth-seeking. These qualities are not just for becoming historians; they are equally important in every aspect of life, including state governance, administration, judiciary, diplomacy, journalism, education, research, development and corporate leadership.”
Referring to his own experience, the Deputy Speaker said, “The education acquired in the History Department has given me the courage and motivation to overcome various adversities, struggles and challenges in life. I remember with deep respect the contribution of this department to the position I hold today.”
The Deputy Speaker said that future teachers, researchers, BCS officers, diplomats, judges, journalists, writers, entrepreneurs, policymakers and statesmen will emerge from among you.
So, university life should not be seen as just a stage to earn a degree, but rather as an opportunity to develop yourself as a competent, humane and responsible citizen.”
