Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal on Thursday said that women are performing their duties bravely in all fields, and from now on, female firefighters will also serve the country by devoting themselves to all disasters.
The minister made the comment while interacting with reporters after participating in the training visit and photo session of the first batch of female fire fighters recruited in the Fire Service at Fire Service and Civil Defence Training Complex, Mirpur in the city on Thursday.
He expressed hope that this trend of recruitment of female fire fighters will continue in the future.
Director General of Fire Service and Civil Defence Directorate Brigadier General Md. Main Uddin said that the name of 'Fireman' post was changed to 'Firefighter' under the instructions of the Prime Minister. In continuation of this, the process of appointing women workers to this post began.
Priyanka Halder, Yasmin Khatun and Nazmun Nahar among the 15 female fire fighters expressed their feelings to the mediapersons at the event.
According to the recruitment notification, out of 2,707 applicants for the post of female firefighters through preliminary screening, physical fitness and medical test, written test and oral examination, these 15 women were finally selected for the posts. Female firefighters officially joined the fire service on November 18.
Now they are undergoing basic training. Previously, female officers were appointed as officers in the fire service, but this is the first time that women have been appointed as fire fighters.
