Stern action will be taken against tanneries if they produce excessive chromium radiation beyond the standard set by Leather Working Group (LWG), warned Industries Minister Nurul Majid Mahmud Humayun on Wednesday.
The decision was taken at a meeting presided over by the minister at the secretariat, said a handout of Press Information Department (PID).
Tanneries will be given time for controlling the level of chromium radiation, he said, adding that: “They’ll be shut down if they fail to achieve the desired standard.”
According to a report in February, only seven tanneries out of 130 were producing standard level of radiation and nine others were improving very slowly, he said, ordering all tanneries to take quick measures.
