An organized gang of robbers posing as Detective Branch officials on Sunday made away with Tk 85 lakh at South Keraniganj on the outskirts of the capital in broad daylight.
The incident took place at Bhawarviti in Basta Union at noon, said Shahabuddin Kabir, additional superintendent of police (Keraniganj Circle).
Victim Marfat Ali said he has a wholesale grocery shop at Darigaon Bazar. On Sunday noon, he was headed to the National Bank carrying Tk 85 lakh in cash to deposit in the bank.
When he reached the Maowa Road area of Bhawarviti, the robbers numbering eight to 10 waylaid Marafat Ali, introduced themselves as the members of Detective Branch (DB) and looted the money from him.

"A probe is on," said ASP Shahabuddin Kabir.
Special drive is on to arrest the culprits, added the officer.
Earlier on November 8, RAB arrested inter-district robbers leaders Jasim Mollah, Zahidul Kazi, and Yasin while they were carrying out a robbery in the Abdullahpur Mawa Road area wearing police uniforms.
